Assisted by our Tees Valley Screen Production Service, Golden Globe-winning and 9-time BAFTA-nominated 1917 is released in cinemas across the UK today. This highly anticipated World War 1 epic sees director Sam Mendes’ vision of a tale inspired by his grandfather and others who served come to life. 1917 tells the story of two young British soldiers at the height of the war as they are given a seemingly impossible task. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory to deliver a message that could potentially save 1600 of their fellow soldiers. The film stars British actors including George MacKay, Dean-Charles Chapman, Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch.

1917 features Tees Valley’s award-winning tourist attraction, the Tees Barrage. The film is the biggest production to feature a Tees Valley landmark since 2007’s Atonement. Head of Production Service for Tees Valley Screen, Gayle Woodruffe, says ‘I’m delighted that this epic, award-winning film, which first came to us in 2018 looking for period locations has shot at one of our amazing locations. This raises the region’s profile as filming friendly; it’s such a coup for the region to be involved in such a prestigious production with such a high profile production team.’
