NFM Academy: The Art of Freelancing

Posted on 13th July 2020 by Charlotte Nixon

Monday 20th July, Tuesday 21st July & Friday 24th July

Whether you work in TV drama, independent features, short films, documentary, or you’re just beginning your career, working as a freelancer can be really challenging. It is, however, something the majority of people working in film and TV have to manage at some point.

Our 3-part course will help you get to grips with the various challenges of working freelance.

  • #1 – Mental Health and Wellbeing (Monday 20th July, 4pm-5:30pm) – This session covers the 5 ways to wellbeing. We will discuss what mental health means, as well as the impact of prolonged stress on health. We will then look at resilience – how to focus on self-protection, self-reflection and how to understand triggers, as well as where to look for support.
  • #2 – Working Freelance – What to Expect (Tuesday 21st July, 4pm-5:30pm) – This session covers what ‘freelance’ means, how this impacts your tax, when to register as a new entrant, how to charge for your work, contracting, IP and copyright (protecting your creativity), how to retain your skills and stay on top of developments, your online presence, and how to deal with people.
  • #3 – Action Planning – Getting Your House in Order (Friday 24th July, 3pm-4:30pm) – We’ll look at why setting goals for your career is important, at the least knowing what you don’t want and at best giving yourself a route plan to what you do want. We’ll discuss how to set your goals and develop an action plan to achieve them.

These will be interactive sessions, and you will need your camera and microphone on. This is a three-part course, and it is expected that you attend all of the sessions you are able to to maximise your experience.

This session is delivered by Alison Surtees from Almaison Producers.

Register via Eventbrite here. We will send a Zoom link via email 24 hours before the event.
