Open Studio

Towards the last two weeks of Connect/Exchange residency, I held an Open Studio event in my studio at BALTIC and hosted a roundtable discussion together with Verity Birt called ‘Folding Time’.

These events gave me a chance to consolidate the ideas I’d been working with, and the roundtable was a nice way to bring together all the artists Verity and I had been in conversation with over the past two months with a sprawling discussion about material entanglements in space and time in archeological, anthropological and biological contexts.

As I was forced to reflect on research undertaken over the past months I realised I had been sitting on various ideas around technology and parasitism for some time now, and needed to actually make some work. I spent most of July scripting, storyboarding, and organising film shoots for the coming month.

Inevitably, I had met many more local artists and more ideas and opportunities were emerging just as the residency was coming to an end. I had quite a few meetings in July which were incredibly helpful for the developing my own thoughts on the film project, my first venture into live action. In particular, Kate Liston, who had recently completed a film piece herself, gave me some pretty invaluable practical advice about organising shoots (call-sheets, runners, snacks).

Following Connect/Exchange, I spent a month in Glasgow filming intensively over three weeks in Creative Lab at the CCA. It was pretty stressful, logistically (I now understand why filmmakers have producers) but I was able to complete many of the scenes that I spent much of July figuring out in Newcastle. I’ve since moved to Boston where I hope to find time for post-production over the next couple of months.
